Introduction

Sometimes, the things you become good at are not just because you planned them from the start.

They are often a combination of experience, curiosity, pressure, and the willingness to grow even when things are not convenient.

My journey into becoming a Certified Data Analyst didn’t start with a big announcement or a clear roadmap. It was built over time—through work, exposure, challenges, and a decision to go deeper when many would have stopped at “good enough.”

And looking back now, I can say this much: the journey was not easy… but it was worth it.

The Foundation Was Already There

Before I ever took on formal training in Data Analysis, I had already been working closely with data for years.

At the Dental Technologists Registration Board of Nigeria, Microsoft Excel was not just a tool—it was a core part of the system. It was used to manage records, maintain databases, and handle essential information about members of the profession.

So naturally, I became very familiar with Excel.

Over time, that exposure built my confidence.

I wasn’t just using Excel—I understood how to use it to organize data, clean it, analyze it, and even present it in a meaningful way.

On top of that, my work in web design and development introduced me to MySQL, where I handled data storage and backend systems.

So in many ways, the foundation was already there.

But something was missing.

The Desire to Go Deeper

Even with all that experience, something kept pushing me.

Data Analysis was becoming more visible, more talked about, and more competitive.

And I couldn’t ignore that.

But instead of just jumping in because it was trending, I asked myself a deeper question:

“If this is truly a profession, then there must be more to it than what I already know.”

That mindset changed everything.

Because instead of staying at the surface level, I made a decision to go deeper—to truly understand what Data Analysis really entails.

And that decision led me to fall in love with it.

The Opportunity That Changed Everything

In September/October 2024, an opportunity came.

Someone who believed in my tech journey reached out and asked if I would be interested in taking a Data Analysis course.

At that time, she was already studying Frontend Development at AltSchool, and when she saw the scholarship opportunity, she encouraged me to apply.

Without hesitation, I went for it.

Not just because I wanted the certificate—but because I knew this was something I needed for my growth.

After writing the scholarship exam, I was awarded a 50% discount.

And the remaining 50%?

She supported me with it.

That moment meant a lot.

Because it wasn’t just about money—it was about belief.

And from there, the journey officially began.

The Real Learning Begins

At the start, everything felt familiar… until it wasn’t.

Python was introduced.

At first, I thought it would be easy—after all, I had experience with HTML, PHP, and MySQL.

But I quickly realized this was a different level entirely.

Then came pandas, matplotlib, and other tools that completely changed how I looked at data.

It was challenging.

And to make things more intense, I was still working a full-time job—Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Finding time to study was not easy.

But I kept going.

Stepping Into Responsibility

During the program, I was nominated and later elected as the Course Representative for my cohort.

That role wasn’t just a title—it came with responsibility.

I made myself available to help others.

I organized online tutorials to guide those who were completely new to programming and Excel.

Even though challenges limited how far those sessions could go, I’m proud that I was able to impact others in some way.

And along the journey, I met amazing people—people with genuine hearts and shared goals.

Connections like these remind you that you’re not alone in the journey.

The Real Test of Discipline

As the course progressed, things became more demanding.

We were introduced to Power BI and other tools.

But the real challenge wasn’t just the content.

It was the environment.

Unstable electricity.

Poor internet.

Limited access to a proper system.

And a workload that constantly competed for my attention.

There were days I had to leave my comfort zone just to attend live classes—finding a place where I could access the resources I needed.

It wasn’t convenient.

But growth rarely is.

Assignments, Pressure, and Group Work

Assignments came with deadlines.

And sometimes, I found myself submitting later than others—not because I wasn’t serious, but because I was overwhelmed.

There were also exams, which came with their own pressure.

But one of the most challenging parts was the group project.

Working with people from different backgrounds, different schedules, and different levels of availability made things difficult.

There were delays.

There were challenges.

But eventually, we got it done.

And that, in itself, was a victory.

The Outcome and the Perspective

At some point, some people felt the training didn’t fully meet their expectations.

Some even said they wouldn’t have joined if they had known earlier.

And honestly, I understand that perspective.

Because people experience things differently.

But for me, I see it differently.

I see growth.

I see exposure.

I see a journey that stretched me in ways I didn’t expect.

And most importantly—I see value.

Conclusion

Today, I still focus more on web design and development for my daily survival.

But I do not see my Data Analysis journey as wasted.

I value the knowledge. I value the certificate. And I believe it will open doors for me in the future.

Because one thing I’ve come to understand is this:

No knowledge is ever wasted.

Everything you learn… has a way of finding its place at the right time.
